Redefining success with Arianna Huffington

The traditional metrics of success rarely take into account of our individual values and wisedom. Money, titles, real estate, marriage, children, etc. The push to achieve these metrics often come at the cost of our wellbeing, sleep, joy and for some, life. This doesn't measure up. Why are we giving up our life for the sake of these metrics?

Some may drive that faustian bargain, "once I achieve these metrics, then I can put my feet up." But the price of these items are rarely satiated.

Hence we live in a society where we take pride in having no work life balance. Where working on a sick day is a badge of honor and we martyr ourselves for that illusive "just successful enough feeling". I too have called out more than once out of pride, "you can sleep when you're dead!"

So, now, one of the biggest success stories of the last decade, power woman, mother, wife and entrepreneur Arianna Huffington has written a book on this very topic called Thrive. Granted Ms Huffington has made her millions and decided now is a good time to put her feet up (almost) and write a book warning young people about the dangers of all work no play.

"When I got back to my office, I fainted, hit my head on my desk, broke my cheekbone, and had to get five stitches around my right eye".

Driven by what she calls the "obnoxious roommate in our head" we let it drive us as we become disconnected to what is really meaningful. The book is rather compelling and I recently got to hear her speak at the New America Foundation on Redefining Success. You can find the podcast of the event here

What do you think? Is it time to drop the multi-tasking?
